Beginning in Nature's Valley and ending at Storms River, this five-day trail takes hikers deep into the mountains, the ancient forests, and the quiet places in between, through the very heart of the Tsitsikamma Mountains. The trail passes through coastal thicket, fynbos, pristine afro-montane forest, and pine plantations - with spectacular river crossings and scenic waterfalls along the way. Each day brings something different, and each overnight hut is positioned to make the most of its surroundings. This is not a trail you rush, it's one you settle into.
Distance: 62km over 5 days
Difficulty: Moderate — good base fitness required; no technical scrambling, but daily distances and mountain ascents add up
Huts: Recently renovated modern cabins and A-frames, with hot showers via a donkey boiler system
Not suitable for: Children under 12, or hikers over 65 (without doctor's approval)
Best time to go: September to April for warmer weather and safer river crossings
Tucked between the bustling towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay lies one of South Africa's best-kept secrets - an untouched stretch of coastline that shows no signs of development or civilisation. The Harkerville Coastal Trail is raw, rewarding and utterly unforgettable. This is not a gentle coastal stroll, this will give you a full body workout - chains, ladders and scrambling are all part of the journey. This is one of the most spectacular 2 day hikes in the country.
Distance: 26km over 2 days (Day 1 - 14km; Day 2 - 12km)
Difficulty: Challenging — chains, ladders, rock scrambling, and steep descents are part of the adventure
Best for: Fit and experienced hikers who are comfortable with heights
Not suitable for: Children under 12, hikers over 65 (without doctor's approval), or hikers with vertigo or a fear of heights
Best time to go: March to May and September to November for mild temperatures and stable weather
4x4 Overlanding Adventures
Our guided 4x4 overlanding tours are designed for people who want the adventure without the equipment bill.
Bring your standard 4x4 — we'll handle everything else. Our lead vehicle carries all the recovery gear, communications equipment, and emergency kit your journey needs. Your job is simply to drive, look up, and take it all in.
From the dramatic mountain passes and ancient forests of our home in the Southern Cape, to the red dunes of the Kalahari, the wild coastline of Namibia, and the vast open silence of Botswana - we design routes that take you deep into Southern Africa's most extraordinary landscapes.
